Celtic fans could be in for a major mid-season boost as Kyogo Furuhashi is reportedly on the verge of a sensational return from Birmingham City. The 30-year-old striker, who became a fan favourite at Parkhead with 85 goals in 165 appearances, struggled to make an impact in England after a £10million move last summer.
Kyogo’s time at Birmingham has been difficult, with the Japanese forward scoring just one goal in all competitions so far this season. His struggles have put his place in Japan’s World Cup squad at risk, making a return to Glasgow an increasingly attractive option for both player and club.
Martin O’Neill has identified the forward as a top priority in the January transfer window, with Celtic desperate to strengthen their frontline ahead of the clash with Dundee United this weekend. Johnny Kenny remains the only fit first-team striker, while Kelechi Iheanacho has battled injuries since joining as a free agent.
The club’s decision-makers are said to have been “exploring a deal” for Kyogo over the past 24 hours, aiming to complete the move swiftly. A return of this calibre could immediately solve Celtic’s striker crisis and provide fans with a familiar attacking spark.
