Rangers have been dealt a major setback in their Premiership title bid after both Connor Barron and Dujon Sterling picked up injuries during Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Aberdeen. Manager Danny Rohl had initially hoped the duo could return for the upcoming fixture at Pittodrie, but medical scans have delivered the worst possible news.
Barron, who limped off shortly before full time, has suffered a knee injury that is expected to keep the dynamic midfielder out until March at the earliest. Meanwhile, Sterling damaged a hamstring during a second-half cameo, adding to concerns after his long recovery from a ruptured Achilles last year.
Sterling, who only returned to the first team in December, had been a key figure in Rohl’s side, keeping stalwart James Tavernier out of the starting XI in the derby victory over Celtic. With Sterling sidelined again, Rohl will rely on his ageing captain and only backup Max Aarons to fill the right-back slot. No definite timeline has been given for Sterling’s recovery, but the defender is bracing for a lengthy absence.
Barron’s situation is clearer: the Scotland international has been told he will miss between two to three months, a significant loss as Rangers attempt to close the gap on Hearts at the top of the table. Barron has been in outstanding form, earning man of the match in the win over Aberdeen by setting up both goals for Manny Fernandez and Nico Raskin.
Adding to Rohl’s challenges, the manager had been looking to strengthen his midfield options with the £4m capture of Sturm Graz enforcer Tochi Chukwuani. The injuries to Barron and Sterling now make those reinforcements even more crucial for Rangers’ title push.
This double blow leaves Rangers facing a tough period, with key fixtures looming in the Scottish Premiership and limited options in central midfield and right-back. Fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for both players as Rohl navigates the crucial stages of the season.
