RANGERS have finally learned the cost of their summer acquisition of Lyall Cameron, with an SPFL tribunal ordering the Ibrox club to pay Dundee a significant six-figure compensation fee.
The 23-year-old midfielder moved to Govan last summer after signing a pre-contract agreement in February 2025. However, it has taken nearly 11 months for a final valuation to be reached after the two clubs failed to agree on a private settlement.
It is understood that the independent tribunal has set the compensation fee in the region of £400,000. Rangers’ final offer before the hearing was believed to be around £300,000, but the panel sided closer to the Dark Blues’ valuation of their academy graduate.
A Long Road to Resolution
Cameron, who made over 100 appearances for Dundee before his move, was a key figure at Dens Park. Under SPFL rules, clubs are entitled to training compensation for players under the age of 24 who move cross-border or between Scottish clubs at the end of their contracts.
Dundee manager Steven Pressley had previously voiced his frustration over the delay, arguing that the current system is “flawed” when a selling club has to wait almost a year to receive funds for a player already playing for a rival. The ruling is final, with no path for appeal for either Rangers or Dundee.
From Ibrox to Pittodrie
The timing of the ruling is notable given Cameron’s current situation. Despite the high-profile nature of his move to Glasgow, the midfielder has struggled for consistent minutes under Danny Rohl.
Just last week, Cameron secured a loan move to Aberdeen for the remainder of the season. He made an immediate impact on his debut for the Dons, providing the assist for the winning goal in their Scottish Cup victory over Raith Rovers on Sunday.
While some sections of the Aberdeen support have questioned the signing of an “Old Firm loan,” the player himself has vowed to win over the Pittodrie faithful through his performances on the pitch.
What’s Next for Rangers?
For Rangers, the settlement of this fee clears the decks as Danny Rohl looks to further balance the books in the final week of the January window. With new signings Andreas Skov Olsen and Tochi Chukwuani already integrating into the squad, the club is expected to focus on outgoings to offset the recent tribunal costs and transfer spend.
