Celtic Exit Europa League Despite Heroic 1-0 Victory Over Stuttgart

Celtic produced a performance of immense grit and heart to secure their first-ever win on German soil, defeating Stuttgart 1-0 in the MHP Arena. However, the victory wasn’t quite enough to overturn the 4-1 first-leg deficit, ending the Hoops’ European journey for this season.

Despite the exit, the night belonged to Luke McCowan, who stunned the hosts after just 28 seconds—the earliest European goal Stuttgart have ever conceded. It was a “lightning-bolt” start that gave Martin O’Neill’s much-changed side a glimmer of hope for a historic comeback.

Sinisalo Shines as Schmeichel Sits Out

With Kasper Schmeichel rested, back-up keeper Viljami Sinisalo put in a “Player of the Match” performance. The Finn made a string of top-class saves to keep a clean sheet as Stuttgart launched a second-half siege, having two goals ruled out for offside.

The defensive rearguard, featuring Dane Murray and Ben Arthur, held firm despite Stuttgart racking up 18 entries into the final third within the first 25 minutes. Murray, in particular, earned plaudits for a goal-saving block to deny Deniz Undav.

O’Neill’s Derby Dilemma

The win in Germany has presented interim boss Martin O’Neill with a series of welcome headaches ahead of Sunday’s trip to Ibrox:

  • The Keeper: After Sinisalo’s heroics, will the Finn keep his place over the under-fire Schmeichel?
  • The Defence: With Auston Trusty suspended, has Dane Murray done enough to start the Old Firm?
  • The Attack: The trio of Maeda, McCowan, and Adamu looked lethal on the counter. Will they lead the line on Sunday?

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the team, their attitude and desire,” O’Neill said after the final whistle. “It’s a different game on Sunday. We’ll travel back tomorrow and go again.”

🗣️ THE FITBA FOCUS VIEW: WHO STARTS AT IBROX?

A win in Germany is no small feat—it’s taken 17 attempts to get there. But the focus shifts immediately to the league.

Should Sinisalo start ahead of Schmeichel on Sunday? And who should replace Trusty in the heart of the defence?
