RANGERS have sent a clear message to the European elite by rejecting a significant offer from AS Monaco for winger Djeidi Gassama.
The Ligue 1 side, currently battling in the Champions League playoff rounds, reportedly approached the Ibrox club with a “cheeky” loan-to-buy offer. The deal included an obligation to purchase the 22-year-old in the summer for a fee understood to be in excess of £10 million.
Danny Rohl’s Title Priority
Despite the tempting eight-figure valuation, manager Danny Rohl has reportedly “turfed out” the approach. With Rangers currently in the midst of a historic three-way title race alongside Hearts and Celtic, Rohl views Gassama as an “untouchable” asset for the second half of the season.
Gassama, who joined from Sheffield Wednesday in a bargain summer move, has been a revelation at Ibrox. His pace and unpredictability were on full display during Sunday’s 3-0 win over Dundee, where he netted a stunning curling effort to remind suitors exactly why he is so highly valued.
European Interest Intensifies
Monaco aren’t the only club keeping tabs on the former PSG academy graduate. Reports suggest that Villarreal and Club Brugge are also monitoring the Frenchman’s progress. However, Rangers’ stance remains firm: January is not the time to sell.
The club believes that if Gassama continues his current trajectory and helps secure silverware this season, his market value could skyrocket even further by the summer transfer window.
“Rangers are counting on the player,” a source close to the deal stated. “The ambition this year is the title and Champions League group stage football. Selling a key match-winner now would run counter to everything Danny Rohl is building.”
One Out, One In?
While Gassama is staying put, there is movement elsewhere in the squad. Joe Rothwell is expected to be allowed to leave if a permanent buyer can be found, while the club continues to chase Ryan Naderi from Hansa Rostock to bolster their attacking options before the window slams shut.
Gers fans—is £10m+ too much to turn down for Gassama, or is keeping him the only way we secure the title this season? Let us know in the comments!
