The stakes for Sunday’s Scottish Cup Quarter-Final at Ibrox have transcended a simple rivalry. For Rangers head coach Danny Röhl, the mission is now a necessity. As the German tactician prepares for a second showdown with Celtic in just seven days, he has made it clear that “ambition” is no longer enough—silverware is the required result.
Despite closing a massive 13-point gap since replacing Russell Martin earlier this season, Röhl refuses to use the club’s early-season struggles as a shield. Following back-to-back draws against Livingston and Celtic, the Gers find themselves six points off league leaders Hearts. With the Premiership race tightening, the Scottish Cup has become the immediate priority for a club that demands trophies.
“As a Rangers manager you have to [win trophies],” Röhl insisted. “As a club you have to. With these ambitions, we have to.”
Silencing the 7,500: A Historic Atmosphere
Sunday’s clash carries a unique edge: the largest visiting support at Ibrox in eight years. For the first time since 2018, 7,500 Celtic supporters will occupy the entire Broomloan Stand, fundamentally shifting the traditional “Ibrox cauldron” dynamic.
However, Röhl remains unfazed by the increased noise from the away end. His blueprint for success is simple: repeat the first 50 minutes of last weekend’s 2-2 draw, where Rangers dominated the proceedings before a dramatic Celtic comeback.
“If we play 50 minutes like we did [last week], then the 7,500 will stay quiet,” Röhl stated. “We can influence and impact our performance on the pitch. The atmosphere was incredible for 50 minutes last week, really incredible. They pushed our players forward, then it goes to 2-1 and you feel it in the stadium. But that 50 minutes was really, really outstanding.”
No Excuses in the Title Race
While the Cup is the focus this weekend, the fallout from Wednesday night’s results looms large. Celtic’s victory at Pittodrie saw them leapfrog Rangers into second place, leaving Röhl’s men in third (albeit with a game in hand). For the Rangers boss, the recent “unnecessary” draws must be put to bed if they are to regain momentum for the final nine league games.
“I take it also not as an excuse that we come from 13 points behind,” Röhl added, dismissing the idea of a ‘transitional’ season. “We have a great opportunity on Sunday to make a good step towards the first trophy.”
