Rangers Football Club has today issued a powerful and wide-ranging statement following the violent scenes at Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie, calling for a “fully independent review” into the systemic failures that led to matchday disorder. Breaking their silence after days of internal discussions, the Ibrox hierarchy condemned the violence unequivocally while vowing to robustly defend the reputation of their own supporters.
The club confirmed they have been in deep consultation with staff, fan groups, and authorities—including Police Scotland and the Safety Advisory Group—to establish the facts behind a day that saw pitch invasions, assaults, and significant stadium damage.
Demands for a “Wide-Ranging” Independent Review
In a significant move, Rangers have backed the calls for a transparent investigation that goes beyond mere surface-level arrests. The club insists that the review must examine the “decisions and actions of all relevant parties,” starting from the initial choice to grant a large away ticket allocation through to the security breakdown following the final whistle.
“All parties must be prepared to have their actions and decision-making subjected to proper scrutiny,” the statement read. The club also warned that any individuals identified and convicted of offences will face the harshest possible internal sanctions, including lifetime stadium bans and the withdrawal of ticketing privileges.
“Vile and Cowardly”: Fury Over Ibrox Disaster Graffiti
Perhaps the most emotive section of the statement addressed the desecration of the stadium’s history. Rangers officials expressed their “appall” at the discovery of graffiti within the Broomloan Stand mocking the Ibrox Disaster, the 1971 tragedy that claimed 66 lives.
The club’s stance on the matter was uncompromising: “The memory of the 66 supporters who lost their lives in January 1971 deserves dignity and respect. To desecrate their memory is vile. It is cowardly. It is shameful. This is not football rivalry and it is not banter. It is the abuse of a tragedy.”
Defending the Rangers Support
Addressing the narrative that has developed since Sunday, the club was quick to shield the vast majority of the home support from blanket criticism. While acknowledging the “unacceptable” disorder, the board hit back at any commentary that ignores the context of the day or unfairly tarnishes the reputation of the tens of thousands who attended simply to support their team.
“We will not accept a narrative that ignores the full context of what happened,” the club asserted, promising fans that while they must respect ongoing judicial processes, they will represent the club’s interests “robustly” behind the scenes.
Rangers concluded by thanking the emergency services, stewards, and staff who worked under “extremely difficult circumstances” and confirmed they would cooperate fully with all regulatory bodies as the investigation moves into its next phase.
